What is competing for your attention? A lot, right? Because of all that “competition,” there is a real danger that we focus on the frivolous and ignore the indispensable. Thank heaven we have a Savior who is always focused on us!
During these summer weeks, as we work our way through Luke’s Gospel, Jesus is teaching us things He wants us to focus on as we hold on to Him as our Saviour. Today He wants us to give our undivided attention to the One Thing Needed—Him and His Word.
Most would agree with Jesus that ultimately there are not that many things that are absolutely necessary in life. But Jesus really gets our attention when He says that only one thing is needed. Like Martha, we might object. She was concerned about many things—important things—like preparing dinner for Jesus and all His disciples. Don’t we need water, food, clothing, shelter, friendship, etc.
Yet, what Jesus said is true. Because only one thing—the gospel—can create and sustain the faith that makes one live forever as God’s dear child and heir! Look what it did for Sarah—and for Abraham! Look what it did for Mary, and eventually her sister Martha, too. God’s promise turned skeptical Sarah into a mother laughing for joy. One day, we will be filled with eternal joy, because we heard and believed the One Thing Needed, the promises of God.
