“Epiphany” comes from a Greek word that means “reveal.” It is the season when you see Jesus begin His public ministry, revealing the reason the Son of God came to earth. During Epiphany, you will come to understand that when the true identity of Jesus is revealed, you realize your own true identity as well. Today’s readings reveal Jesus as the Light of this dark world.
The prophet Isaiah vividly described humanity as “people walking in darkness.” The prophecy singled out norther Israel—Galilee—as a prime example of darkness hiding the truth, and foretold that the Messiah would enlighten them.
In our Gospel Lesson, Jesus sets up His “headquarters” in just that darkened region, moving from Nazareth to Capernaum. And then He began enlightening them, preaching the Gospel, and calling His first disciples to join in His mission.
The Light of Jesus has gone out into the whole world. Yet the darkness of this world continually fights back. There is so much to do bringing the Light of Jesus to darkened souls.
Our Epistle Lesson reminds us to continue to walk in the light as children of light. The devil would like nothing more than to cover us in his darkness once again. Therefore, let us keep our eyes on Jesus. Let Him keep enlightening you through His Word, and live your life in His light!
