He Lives to Rule All Things for the Church

May 21, 2023 —

This Sunday we light the Christ Candle for the last time until Christmas. This candle marks the “festival half” of the church year where each year we review the time of Christ’s life on earth.

Our First Lesson, from the Book of Acts records the day Jesus ascended back into heaven to sit at the right hand of the Father and rule the universe for the good of His church.

Our Epistle Lesson describes Christ’s almighty rule from the right hand of the Father. “God also placed all things under his feet and made him head over everything for the church.”

Our Gospel Lesson records how Jesus summarized His entire mission on earth before ascending and told His disciples what their mission would be once the Holy Spirit descended on them on the day of Pentecost. Then He ascended while blessing them.

We’ll consider our Epistle Lesson in the sermon under the theme: Look, You Saints, The Sight Is Glorious!

This Sunday, our readings are:

      Acts 1:1–11

      Ephesians 1:15–2    (sermon text)

      Luke 24:44–53      Psalm 47
