The Church God Wants: A Church That’s Quick to Forgive

Sometimes people accuse Christians of having a “holier than thou” attitude. No doubt there have been church members through the centuries who have demonstrated that attitude. If we try to live according to God’s law, it is frustrating to see immoral acts.

Nevertheless, true Christians understand that they are sinners too, who have been forgiven by the blood of Christ. In fact, Forgiveness is the central concept of what the faith and the church are all about. It’s central because sin and death are central to our existence. We have all sinned, therefore we will all die, therefore we all need forgiveness.

Jesus taught us to pray, “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who sin against us.” If we understand that we are forgiven—and how much—then we will also forgive. And true forgiveness is also forgetting. In God’s church, we need to forgive, just as we are forgiven. That’s the kind of Church God Wants.
