“Epiphany” comes from a Greek word that means “reveal.” Today our Lessons reveal even more about just who Jesus is and how we should regard him.
In our Old Testament Lesson God foretold through Moses that a Prophet greater than Moses would come, whose Word the whole world must listen to. In our Epistle Lesson, the book of Hebrews refers to Jesus as our Apostle and High Priest, “worthy of greater glory than Moses.”
Jesus showed firsthand His propetic power and authority when visiting the synagogue in His adopted hometown, Capernaum. The people there could tell by His teaching that He was not just some ordinary Rabbi. They could feel the authority in His prophetic words.
So could the demons. They knew exactly who He was and reacted violently to His presence. Speaking through the voice of a possessed man, a demon cried out the truth: “I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” And that is just who He is!
Jesus came as the Prophet Moses foretold, and He proved it by His Words and His deeds. All people do well to listen to everything He says, just as Moses wrote!
