Without the resurrection of Jesus, I would have to wonder whether anything He said was true. After all, He promised He would rise from the dead. What then would become of all His other promises? They wouldn’t be worth the paper they’d not yet been written on!

The two disciples on the Road to Emmaus expressed deep disappointment as they made their way out of Jerusalem. Why were they so dismayed? Because they thought Jesus had failed in His mission and they feared that they had wasted their time as His followers.

What restored their hope? Two things. First, Jesus showed them through a thorough Bible Study of the Old Testament that this “prophet” they had followed had indeed fulfilled all the prophecies about who the coming Messiah would be and what He would do! Second, Jesus showed them Himself, as they recognized Him “in the breaking of the bread.” Suddenly it all made sense! Suddenly their hope was restored, and that restored hope changed their lives!

May our sure hope in Jesus change our lives too! May we live new lives in Him who lives forever!
