The last week of the Lenten season is called Holy Week. It begins with the commemoration of Palm Sunday, the day on which Jesus entered Jerusalem for the last time. Next, we typically gather to remember the Last Supper and Jesus’ institution of the Lord’s Supper. This event took place on the evening of the Thursday after Palm Sunday. Jesus created Holy Communion with His command, “Take and eat…” and “Take drink…” The Latin word for “command” is mandatum, and from that Latin word comes the name for the day, Maundy Thursday. Finally, Good Friday brings everything to a sudden and abrupt halt at the foot of the Cross. On Good Friday, we remember Jesus’ words from the Cross and the significance of His life and death. He died with our sins blamed upon Him and His perfect life credited to us, so that we stand forgiven and righteous by faith in God’s sight.
