The Christian Seeks Spiritual Wealth

How much easier life as a Christian would be if there weren’t so many obstacles! Last week we learned about the weeds that surround the wheat, that is, the fact that believers and unbelievers are in the same “field.” God plants the wheat with His Word. But then the devil sows seeds of dissent, wickedness, and evil of all kinds.

In this week’s parables, Jesus speaks of treasure hidden in an otherwise “ordinary” place. Just as an ordinary body of water may contain a clam that produces a very valuable pearl, and just as a field can be a hiding place for buried treasure, in the same way the treasure of God’s priceless Word and the incalculably valuable gift of salvation by grace are to be found right here in this wicked world.

Hint: They’re not really hiding. They are available wherever the Gospel is preached in its truth and purity and the sacraments are rightly administered according to Jesus’ institution.
