Good Shepherd

He Lives to Be My Good Shepherd

April 30, 2023 —

Jesus doesn’t exactly pay us a compliment by comparing us to sheep. But it’s an apt picture, because like sheep we need a Shepherd. Without Jesus we wouldn’t know which way to go. We’d be unable to care for ourselves, especially with all the dangers we face in the world both to body and soul.

But Jesus is our Good Shepherd. He opened the way to heaven, as He tells us when calling Himself “the gate.” He is the only way to enter heaven. Furthermore He laid down His life for us. He destroyed the ultimate wolf, the devil, and as long as we stay in His care, He’ll protect us from all the other wolves and woes of life, even persecution (Epistle Lesson). With Him as our Shepherd, we willingly suffer as He suffered for us to save us.

We’ll consider our epistle in the sermon under the theme: Suffer with the Shepherd Who Suffered for You

This Sunday, our readings are:

      Acts 2:42–47

      1 Peter 2:19–25  (sermon text)

      John 10:1–10

     Psalm 23
