January 4 2026 —
We continue the Christmas celebration of the dawning of the light of all mankind. When the sun rises, we can see things that we haven’t seen before. When Christ the Savior is born, the light of new revelation breaks over the world. When the Son rises, we can clearly see the grace of God, our Redeemer. In the hymn Silent Night we sang on Christmas Eve “Silent night, holy night! Son of God, love’s pure light radiant beams from thy holy face with the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus Lord, at thy birth.”
And so it is that Christmas was the dawn on redeeming grace. Jesus came to bring us His righteousness: “My soul will celebrate because of my God, for he has clothed me in garments of salvation. With a robe of righteousness he covered me,” our Old Testament reading (Isaiah 61:10-62:3) says. God promises, “I will not be quiet, until [the church’s] righteousness goes forth shining brightly, and her salvation burns like a torch.”
In our Epistle Lesson we are taught to grow in our faith and appreciation of all Jesus has done for us. And in our Gospel we are reminded that the New Testament ushered in an even better covenant than the old one. “For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”
