A Life of Faith in the Triune God

Trinity Sunday – June 4 2023 —

All three persons of the Holy Trinity created all things at the beginning of time. God the Father spoke. The Word (Jesus) proceeded from the Father and brought everything into existence as the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the deep. Our Old Testament Lesson records the first days of the world.

Our Epistle Lesson gives us the “Apostolic Benediction,” the New Testament triune benediction.

Our Gospel Lesson records how Jesus sent out His disciples to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Guest Pastor: Rev. Allen Schroeder will preach on the Gospel Lesson:

“Jesus is with You.”

1. Surely.  2. Always.

This Sunday, our readings are:

      Genesis 1:1—2:3

      2 Corinthians 13:11–14    (sermon text)

      Matthew 28:16–20

“The Holy Ministry Is Filled with Sinners Called by God”

Tax collectors were looked down on in Jesus day as Jewish collaborators with the Roman occupying power. Since people disliked them so much, they figured they might as well make extra money at it, and thus often cheated and earned their bad reputation. Matthew, pictured on our bulletin cover, was just such a man. But Jesus called Him to be His disciple and train to be one of the 12 apostles.

Our Old Testament Lesson records the calling of Moses. At 80 years old, Moses has learned to be a lot more humble than he was as a “young whipper-snapper.” Now he is so humble the Lord has to remind him that He, God, is calling him and will equip him for the task at hand—leading His people out of slavery.

In the Epistle Lesson Paul emphasizes what a miracle of grace it is that God took him, a former “blasphemer, persecutor, and violent man,” the “chief of sinners” and turned him into the Lord’s spokesman to the gentiles.

Guest Pastor: Rev. Allen Schroeder will preach on the Epistle Lesson:

“Christ Jesus Came into the World to Save Sinners”

1. His abundant grace. 2. His immense patience.

June 11 Readings:

      Exodus 3:1–15

      1 Timothy 1:12–17    (sermon text)

      Matthew 9:9–13

      Psalm 119c

“The Holy Ministry Is Given by God our of Compassion for His People”

Jesus saw the people He preached to and judged that they were like sheep without a shepherd. Those who should have seen to their spiritual needs had fallen down on the job. Jesus commissioned His 12 as apostles and told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore pray that the Lord of the harvest will send out workers into his harvest.”

Just as Jesus commissioned His Apostles to be His successors, so also Moses, at God’s command, commissioned Joshua to be his own successor in leading Israel with the Lord’s guidance.

As a sinner, Paul knew that it was only by God’s grace that he had been made an apostle of Christ Jesus. God doesn’t require perfect people to be pastors. But, as Paul reminds the Corinthians, God does require them to be faithful in carrying out their ministry of leading and feeding the sheep of the Lord.

Guest Pastor: Rev. Jonathan Rossman will preach on the Gospel Lesson:

“Sing to the Lord of Harvest.”

1. We harvest with compassion. 2. We harvest with prayer. 3. We harvest with his message.

      Numbers 27:15–23

      1 Corinthians 4:1–7

      Matthew 9:35–10:8    (sermon text)
